A House VS a Home

Architects are creators of spaces, when shaping a space we think not only about aesthetics but also about space optimization, usability and many other technical criteria. But I believe we can all agree that there’s a profound distinction between designing a house and creating a home. I can’t be the only one that has seen a beautiful house in its structure, function, and form that lacks emotional resonance; what in my opinion makes a home.

But what is a home really? A home is where the intangible meets the tangible. It’s about belonging, comfort, and memory-making. Creating a home is creating the perfect space for its inhabitants, a place that can accompany their daily life and become a part of themselves. For architects, the challenge lies in designing spaces that transcend utility to evoke these deeper connections. Since this topic has become an all consuming thing in my life, I’ve found myself creating my very own criteria of what must be taken into consideration when creating a home, so I’ll share some of my insights:

Understanding people. Everyone has different quirks, routines, values, so understanding how people go about their lives is the key to creating a space that works for them. There is no one element, or cozy feel design that fits all, for me it’s about spaces that can be used and appropriated, a home is a place where the things around you are actually part of your daily life. And for this my friends there is no one that fits all. Connection beats everything. Sometimes we fall into the false belief that open spaces can feel cold, or less “homy” because of their innate openness and amplitude. But open floor plans that encourage interaction, kitchens that draw people in, and outdoor spaces for gathering can foster connections. Think about how architecture can strengthen bonds between people and how spaces that interact with each other make it possible for people in those spaces to also interact.

Life is unpredictable so spaces should be able to fluctuate with time. In my experience a home is a place that evolves as its occupants do. So adaptability should be taken into account in the design stage. It can be anything from: movable walls, modular furniture, or rooms that can serve multiple purposes allow spaces to grow with time.

Not to sound repetitive, to create a home we must go beyond blueprints. As architects, you have the power to set the stage for life’s most meaningful moments. The journey from house to home is an alchemical process—a blending of design, intention, and emotion. As architects, your work goes far beyond constructing buildings. You shape the places where life happens, where people find solace and joy. The next time you draft a design, remember: you’re not just building a house; you’re crafting a home.
