Designing Magic: What Disney Teaches Us About User-Centered Experiences

Design is never just about how something looks, it’s about how it feels, how it works, and ultimately, how it serves. At the core of exceptional design lies one simple, powerful principle: empathy. And no one embodies this better than Disney.

From the very beginning, Walt Disney understood that creating spaces, services, or products wasn’t about self-expression, it was about creating joy for others. He famously said,

“You don’t build it for yourself. You know what the people want and you build it for them.”

This user-centric approach shaped everything Disney did. Whether designing a theme park or a cruise ship, every decision was made with the guest in mind. Not just their needs, but their desires, their frustrations, even the things they don’t say out loud.

In their book Be Our Guest, The Disney Institute explains:

From the very beginning, Walt Disney understood that creating spaces, services, or products wasn’t about self-expression, it was about creating joy for others. He famously said,

“What sets Disney apart is not the quality of its rides or the size of its castles, but the way it makes people feel.”

Design at Disney is not decoration, it’s strategy, intention, and experience woven together.

Take, for example, the placement of trash cans. Research showed that guests are willing to walk about 30 steps before needing to discard something, so trash cans are placed accordingly. It’s a small detail but that’s exactly the point. Every small moment, every touchpoint, is designed to reduce friction and elevate delight. This is not an accident. This is experience architecture.

Even waiting in line a moment traditionally associated with boredom or impatience is reimagined. In Disney parks, queues are immersive. They tell stories. They entertain. Because time waiting is still time experiencing. This reframing turns a potential pain point into part of the magic.

But what does this mean for designers outside the theme park world? For architects, engineers, and creatives shaping the physical and digital spaces people move through every day?

It means that truly meaningful design starts before the pen hits the paper or the mouse clicks the screen. It starts with listening. Observing. Understanding. It means placing the human experience, not the ego of the designer, at the center of every decision. It means asking not “What do I want to create?” but “What does this person need to feel seen, understood, and supported in this space?”

At BetterPros, we believe in this philosophy. Many of the firms we collaborate with are shifting towards more human-centered design models, not just because it’s trendy, but because it works. It creates loyalty. It sparks emotional connection. It turns users into advocates.

And perhaps most importantly, it invites us to be better humans through our work. Because when we design with empathy, when we care deeply about the experience of the other, we’re not just making buildings or products, we’re shaping emotions, behaviors, and memories.

To paraphrase one last Disney insight:

“People may not remember what you said, or even what you did but they will always remember how you made them feel.”

Let’s design for that.
