RETHINKING URBAN ARCHITECTURE THROUGH “MEDIANERAS"

Urban Chaos and Its Emotional Impact

In “Medianeras”, Buenos Aires is portrayed as another character: a chaotic, asymmetrical, disordered city saturated with improvised constructions. This environment reflects the impact of urbanization without comprehensive planning, where buildings grow without harmony, leaving empty spaces, exposed dividing walls, and a pervasive sense of disconnection.

The protagonists, Mariana and Martín, live confined in small, poorly designed apartments, surrounded by dividing walls that symbolize their isolation. Through these walls, the film invites us to reflect on how architecture can shape our emotions, limiting or fostering our ability to connect with others.

The Dividing Wall as a Metaphor

The concept of the “medianera”—those lateral walls of urban buildings—serves as a powerful metaphor for separation and, simultaneously, for possibility. While these walls divide, they are also the point where private spaces meet, suggesting that even in fragmentation, there is potential for connection.

In modern architecture, dividing walls are often seen as imperfections or “useless” spaces, but “Medianeras” redefines them, showing how they can witness parallel lives searching for each other. This raises an essential question: what role does architecture play in fostering meaningful encounters?

The Dehumanization of Modern Spaces

The film also critiques the dehumanization of modern urban spaces. Buildings are designed more to maximize economic returns than to serve human needs. This translates into tiny apartments with blocked views due to neighboring constructions and a general lack of common spaces that encourage social interaction.

In contrast, the film suggests that more mindful architecture could transform the experience of urban dwellers. Designing with the intention to connect rather than separate could make cities more livable and humane.

Hope in the Architecture of the Future

Despite its critical lens, “Medianeras” is also an optimistic film. In the end, Mariana and Martín manage to find each other, suggesting that despite the chaos and disconnection, there is always the possibility of creating meaningful connections. In this sense, the film offers a hopeful vision for architecture: that urban design can evolve to reflect not only functional needs but also the dreams and desires of its people.

Lessons for Architects and Urban Planners

“Medianeras” reminds us that architecture is not just about physical structures; it is also an art that shapes the emotional and social lives of its inhabitants. Designing spaces that foster connection, beauty, and well-being should be a priority in modern architecture.

Ultimately, the film invites us to rethink our cities and imagine how they could become more human environments, where dividing walls are not barriers but potential meeting points.
