I often find myself caught up in debates about the role of technology in shaping our world today. What impact do screens and social media have on our mental health? Is AI poised to disrupt everything we hold dear? Does the solution lie in retreating to a simpler, pre-electric age? After many discussions, I’ve identified three interconnected ideas to help navigate our present reality.
In my final three-hour session with a unique therapist who liked to call himself “an Indigenous man with a university degree,” we explored how human consciousness has evolved over time. The mind is not static. As contexts change, so does our psyche. Social shifts, environmental factors, technological advancements, and personal experiences continually reshape how we perceive ourselves and the world around us.
That day, my therapist articulated something I had been sensing: “What’s new today is how drastically our mental worlds differ, making it harder to find common ground in how we see reality.” With technology, we now inhabit customized realities, where shared understanding is becoming increasingly rare.
While this phenomenon may be concerning, doesn’t it also offer relief from the overly uniform world of previous generations? Perhaps the challenge lies not in these differences, but in learning how to navigate them.
During a recent AI course, my professor shared a striking personal story. In his father’s final days, Alexa served as a therapeutic companion, managing lights, playing music, and providing comfort when family members couldn’t be there. Can machines truly be disconnected from emotional roles in our lives?
That same professor posed another thought-provoking question: “Have you noticed how often we write like machines?” In many ways, we’ve been mimicking the robots we critique for years. So, who’s the real robot in this equation?
Hyper-personalized experiences, fake news, and blurred lines between real and AI-generated content make navigating today’s world more complex than ever. But is rejecting technology the answer?
I don’t believe in the romanticized notion of a screen-free life. Much of our shared world now exists in the digital realm, and future solutions will likely emerge from this very domain we’ve been constructing together.
The real challenge may not be the presence of machines, but how we engage with them. After all, isn’t it through this very screen that we’re able to connect, despite the distance?
