This is where the three regions genuinely diverge, and it matters more than most firms expect before they try it.
Latin American countries sit in or beside US time zones. Mexico, Colombia, and Peru run on US Central and Eastern time. Argentina, Chile, and Brazil are one to two hours ahead of Eastern. A drafter in Bogotá or Buenos Aires works the same hours as your office and answers a question in real time.
India runs 9.5 to 12.5 hours ahead of the US. When your project lead is working, the Indian team is asleep, and the reverse. The workaround is asynchronous handoffs: you send redlines at 5pm, review the results the next morning. For a defined, stable package, that rhythm can work. For an active project with daily questions, every clarification costs a full day.
The Philippines is 12 to 16 hours ahead. Many Philippine providers run a night shift so their team overlaps US hours, which does create real-time contact. The tradeoff is that you are relying on people working through their night, which affects fatigue and retention over long engagements.
Here is why this matters for architecture specifically. Production work generates constant small questions: which window family, what head height, how do you want this section cut. When those questions get answered in real time, work keeps moving. When each one waits for the next handoff window, the work stalls and assumptions creep in.
The rule of thumb across firms that have tried all three: the more iterative and evolving the work, the more time zone alignment matters. The more your work looks like a stack of well-defined, unchanging tasks, the less it matters.
