Architectural Designer (Part Time, New Jersey)

About this job

We are currently looking for a part-time Semi-Senior Architectural Designer / Draftsperson to join one of our client’s teams and support high-end single-family residential projects across New Jersey.

The ideal candidate has solid experience working with U.S.-based architecture firms and is comfortable contributing to Design Development (DD) and Construction Documents (CDs) under established office standards. This role focuses heavily on AutoCAD production and technical documentation, supporting custom residential projects — most of them two-story homes characteristic of the New Jersey area — from design development through permit and construction documentation phases.

BetterPros unlocks human potential by offering competitive compensation, flexibility, constant learning and growth, and the opportunity to work anywhere you want with one of our +130 active clients across the United States.

What you will do

  • Support the development of Design Development (DD) and Construction Document (CD) packages for high-end residential projects.
  • Produce and revise architectural drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Develop and update SketchUp models as required.
  • Incorporate redlines, markups, and client comments into drawing sets.
  • Prepare floor plans, elevations, sections, details, and construction documentation.
  • Coordinate architectural drawings with structural information and consultant requirements.
  • Maintain consistency with established office drafting standards and project documentation practices.
  • Assist with permit and construction drawing production, including permit sets for local authorities and CD sets for general contractors.
  • Perform drawing revisions throughout project development and construction documentation phases.
  • Communicate directly with the McAfee Architects team regarding project progress, questions, and technical coordination needs.
  • Review project information and reference drawings to ensure accuracy and completeness.
  • Support ongoing residential projects as workload demands fluctuate.
  • Manage multiple priorities in a deadline-driven environment.
  • Maintain clear, timely, and consistent communication with the internal team.
  • Use short screen-share recordings to ask questions or flag issues, minimizing unnecessary meetings.
  • Collaborate to ensure alignment, progress, and on-time delivery.
  • Provide regular updates and meet agreed-upon milestones while maintaining quality standards.

What you'll need to know

  • A degree in Architecture or a related field.
  • Minimum 6-7 years of professional experience in architectural production, including at least 3 years of U.S.-based experience.
  • Strong AutoCAD, SketchUp and Lumion proficiency.
  • Previous U.S. residential architecture experience, ideally with custom single-family homes.
  • Experience producing DD and CD sets.
  • Ability to read and coordinate architectural and structural drawings.
  • Strong attention to detail and documentation standards.
  • Advanced English level.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work efficiently under pressure while maintaining quality.
  • Clear, proactive, and consistent communication.

A great plus

  • Experience with custom luxury residential projects.
  • Experience with coastal residential projects.
  • Experience with residential additions and renovations.
  • Familiarity with permitting and construction documentation processes in the U.S.
  • Comfort integrating into a small, relationship-driven architecture firm and working independently with minimal supervision.
