Retail Construction Project Manager (Full Time, California)

About this job

Can you keep several retail store build-outs moving at once, each with its own schedule, budget, and set of contractors, without letting a single milestone slip? Do you know that a custom millwork package ordered two weeks late can push an entire store opening, and do you plan for it before it happens? One of our California-based clients is looking for a Full-Time Retail Construction Project Manager to support their store development and design team in managing multiple retail store build-outs across the United States, from pre-construction through project closeout.

BetterPros unlocks human potential by offering competitive compensation, flexibility, constant learning and growth, and the opportunity to work anywhere you want with one of our +130 active clients across the United States.

What you will do

  • Independently manage multiple retail store build-outs, keeping each project on schedule and within budget.
  • Develop, maintain, and monitor construction schedules, budgets, and project milestones.
  • Coordinate U.S.-based general contractors, subcontractors, vendors, and internal design teams.
  • Oversee custom millwork coordination, procurement activities, material lead times, and deliveries.
  • Manage RFIs, submittals, change orders, and construction documentation.
  • Identify potential delays, budget deviations, and construction risks, and implement solutions proactively.
  • Lead coordination meetings with U.S.-based contractors and stakeholders.
  • Monitor project progress through completion, including punch lists and closeout activities.

What you'll need to know

  • Degree in Construction Management, Architecture, Civil Engineering, or equivalent technical background with a strong construction project management track record.
  • Advanced English level, both written and spoken, with the confidence to independently lead meetings and communicate with U.S. stakeholders.
  • Minimum 5 years of project management experience in retail construction, commercial interiors, tenant improvements, or store build-outs.
  • Strong understanding of custom millwork, interior finishes, procurement, and construction sequencing.
  • Proven experience coordinating U.S.-based general contractors and vendors.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage several construction projects simultaneously with minimal supervision.
  • Solid experience managing schedules, budgets, RFIs, submittals, and change orders.
  • Excellent organizational, leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • A disciplined, responsible, and eager-to-learn mindset.

A great plus

  • Experience with multi-site retail rollouts or national store programs.
  • Proficiency in construction management and scheduling tools such as Procore, Microsoft Project, Smartsheet, or equivalent.
  • Ability to read and review architectural drawings, millwork shop drawings, and finish specifications.
  • Familiarity with landlord requirements, tenant improvement processes, and permitting across different U.S. jurisdictions.
  • Experience working directly with in-house design teams on brand standards and store prototypes.
  • Background in vendor negotiation and long-lead procurement planning.
