Are you a structurally minded engineer who thinks about the whole building — not just the beam schedules? Do you thrive working on high-end custom residential projects where structural systems are as much about craft as they are about compliance? One of our Florida-based clients is looking for a Part-Time Structural Engineer to join their team, designing luxury custom homes from early concept through Construction Documents. This is a flexible, part-time role with availability to work aligned with Eastern Time (EST).

What you will do

Design complete structural systems for luxury custom residential projects, including foundations (slab on grade, deep foundations, retaining walls), framing (concrete, steel, wood, and hybrid), and lateral systems (shear walls, moment frames, and drag connections).
Perform wind load calculations per ASCE 7 for high-velocity hurricane zones and document load paths clearly.
Produce structural drawings including foundation plans, framing plans, sections, schedules, and connection details to permit quality.
Coordinate directly with the Chief Architect during Concept Design and Design Development — engaging early, not just at the CD stage.
Review architectural drawings for buildability before permit submission, catching issues that would otherwise become RFIs in the field.
Respond to construction-phase RFIs and unexpected field conditions.
Maintain strict file discipline in Buildertrend: correct phase folder, correct naming, and correct revision tracking.

What you'll need to know

Bachelor’s degree in Civil or Structural Engineering (Master’s preferred).
Advanced English level, both written and spoken.
Minimum 5 years of experience in residential structural design.
Demonstrated experience with high-wind code environments such as hurricane zones or other high-velocity wind areas.
Proficiency in structural analysis software: RAM Structural System, ETABS, RISA-3D, or equivalent.
Advanced proficiency in AutoCAD and/or Revit (Revit strongly preferred for BIM coordination).
Disciplined file management and willingness to follow drawing standards exactly.
Reliable availability during 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM EST.

A great plus

Direct experience with Florida building codes, or demonstrated ability to climb a steep code curve fast on previous projects.
Experience on luxury custom residential projects ($1M+ homes) where structural systems are visible architectural features.
Coastal construction experience: corrosion-resistant detailing, treated lumber requirements, and flood zone elevation strategies.
Experience coordinating with general contractors during construction, not just at the drawing stage.
